Micro-forests - 2025

As part of the State Government's Greening Our City Grant, Council is planting over 3,000 trees across four reserves to bring the benefits of forests to our suburbs.

Micro-forests are densely packed patches of native vegetation generally the size of a tennis court, they have been positioned strategically in our urban communities.

These urban wildlife oases are a unique solution to help to mitigate urban heat and promote biodiversity.

Micro-forests have been recognised as part of a worldwide effort to green communities, provide habitat for endangered species, mitigate heat, and store carbon.

These miniature ecosystems pack a powerful punch, creating habitat, supporting biodiversity, and promoting sustainability.

The project includes the planting of 3,000 trees within Micro-forests at key locations to provide dense canopy and cooling benefits. Micro-forests have been shown to capture carbon from the atmosphere, improve soil quality, provide habitat for wildlife and provide important cooling to address the impacts of urban heat.

Street Tree Master Plan

Camden Council in the process of drafting a Street Tree Master Plan to provide a coordinated and strategic approach to future street tree planting and promote the sustainable management of our Urban Forest.

The Camden Street Tree Master Plan will;

-          Consider the existing canopy cover of Camden and specify schemes to increase canopy cover to facilitate the objectives of the Urban Forest Strategy.

 -          Analyses existing species diversity to develop a palette of reliable street tree species that are sustainable in the street environment.

 -          Inform and direct a consistent and effective approach to tree planting in existing streets and future suburbs by specifying ‘the right tree for the right place’.

 -          Identify potential for in road trees, planted traffic islands, medians, and constraints and opportunities.

 -          Support the health and wellbeing of Camden communities by enabling walkable streets that provide pedestrian comfort and respite.

 -          Reinforce and enhance the character of Camden’s precincts through distinct and appropriate street tree planting.
