Regenerating and restoring 4.2 hectares of land along the Nepean River at Camden Town Farm has led to Council being awarded the Habitat and Wildlife Conservation Award at the Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Sustainable Cities Awards.

The Creating Habitat for Camden White Gum Project, funded under the Australian Government’s 20 Million Trees Program, included:

• The removal of 4ha of woody weeds along a portion of Nepean River;
• Replacement planting of 22,000 native trees and shrubs to extend the endangered ecological community River-flat Eucalypt forest; and
• 200 Camden White Gums (which are a nationally threatened plant) installed along Nepean River.

Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli said it was important to maintain the natural landscape in the Camden area.

“Camden residents are lucky enough to be living amongst a beautiful natural landscape, so it is important to continue servicing the land,” Cr Fedeli said.

“It was great to have residents also assist in planting days to help install plants which also gave Council the chance to raise awareness of the need to protect local biodiversity.

“I’d like to thank Keep Australia Beautiful NSW for the recognition as we aim to continue looking after our surroundings.”

The Sustainable Cities Awards inspire councils and communities to make a genuine and lasting contribution to their area, with partnerships between local authorities, businesses, community groups, schools, and individuals.
