Local children have clocked up many hours of reading during the school holidays by taking part in the annual Summer Reading Challenge.

The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children to read for at least 15 minutes every day of the school holidays in helping to avoid the ‘summer slide’ where children could regress in reading ability over the break.

Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said it was encouraging to see almost 12,000 children’s items loaned out from Camden Libraries.

“Reading has a great range of benefits including expanding the mind while keeping it young, healthy and sharp,” Cr Fedeli said.

“I am glad that kids were as enthusiastic as ever about reading for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge as it was a little different with many parents coming in to pick up items due to the pandemic.

“I hope those who participated in this year’s Reading Challenge continue their good habit throughout 2021. I also encourage the wider community to visit Camden Libraries with a range of items available to loan.”

Membership to all Council libraries is available free to everyone, even if you don’t live in the Camden area.
