Camden General Cemetery FAQs

Transfers and Fees

Who is the Operator for Camden General Cemetery?

Camden General Cemetery is located on Crown Lands and managed by Council.

What is an Interment Right?

An interment right is a contract with a cemetery operator that allows the licence holder to undertake burials in a grave (also called an allotment), including interments in earth, columbarium or niche walls. The licence holder of the interment right can decide who can be buried in the allotment. An interment right is an ‘interest’ in land. Please note the licence holder does not become the owner of the land.

What is an Interment Right Holder?

The Interment Right Holder is the registered holder/owner of the burial right/interment license and has all rights over the interment site (sometimes also referred to as an allotment, site, grave or burial site). This person will be responsible for future interments, monument matters and maintenance. It is therefore important that the interment right holder keeps the contact details we hold for them up to date.

What is the difference between a Perpetual Interment Right, and a Renewable Interment Right?

A perpetual interment right allows the licence holder to bury human remains in a particular allotment in a cemetery and for those remains to be left undisturbed forever (in perpetuity).

A renewable interment right allows the licence holder to bury human remains in a particular allotment in a cemetery and for those remains to be left undisturbed for a set period. The renewable interment right can be renewed for additional periods up to a maximum of 99 years. If a renewable interment right is not renewed, the grave may be re-used subject to a range of procedures as set out in the Cemeteries and Crematoria Act 2013 which must be followed by cemetery operators.

At this time, Camden General Cemetery only offers interment rights in perpetuity.

Monumental Works

How do I apply for monumental works?

If you are applying for new monumental works, the Interment Right Holder, or the monumental mason engaged will need to lodge an application for monumental work (with a signature on the application form from the Interment Right Holder).

If there is an existing monument at the site, but you would like to make changes to the work, an application for those amendments will need to be lodged for assessment.

Can I build my own monument in Camden General Cemetery?

No. All monumental works must be undertaken by a licenced monumental mason and require an application for the proposed works.

All monumental works, whether new or an amendment to existing works must comply with the Rules and Conditions for Burials, in addition to the Australian Standards.

Unapproved works may be removed by Council.

What is the difference between major monument amendments, and minor monument works?

Definitions of these works are provided under Camden Council’s adopted fees and charges:

  • Major monument amendments - when major amendments are made to existing monumental works ie. addition of gutters and slab where they did not form part of the original application and approval, complete demolition or replacement of existing works, replacement of damaged or failed monumental works with new.
  • Minor monument works - addition of a vase, statue or inscription to existing monumental works/approval and record keeping.

What fees do I need to pay?

Depending on the scale of works that you are proposing, one of the below fees will apply when the application is lodged:

  • Permission for Monument work
  • Application fee (minor monumental work, plaque approvals, exhumation)
