NAIDOC

It’s finally time to officially celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, through a belated NAIDOC Week next week.

The annual event was postponed to Tuesday 10 November this year due to COVID-19, with Council to run a series of videos on social media to celebrate the roots of the nation, including:

  • Virtual Flag Raising and Mayor’s message;
  • Glenda Chalker – Virtual Welcome to Country;
  • Jo Tanginoa – Dharawal language segment;
  • Children’s Acknowledgement to Country with Binyang the Bookasauraus;
  • Hamani Tanginoa – a young person’s perspective on NAIDOC; and
  • Jo-Ann Wolles – Goanna Hut Bush Tucker – online demonstration.

Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said it is an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the richness of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage.

“It is important to celebrate the ancient history of this country which dates back thousands of generations,” Cr Fedeli said.

“While we cannot all meet together as usual, Council has put together a fantastic series of online events for you to follow along from home.

“This might also be a great opportunity for young families to sit together and talk about the history of our great nation and how valuable and important it is to our existence.”

Schools and businesses can also celebrate NAIDOC Week between 8 and 15 November this year, by:

  • Having a flag raising ceremony;
  • Displaying Indigenous posters around your classroom;
  • Listening to Indigenous music;
  • Studying a famous Indigenous Australian; and
  • Finding out about the traditional Indigenous owners of your area and much more.
