Illegal Dumping

Dumping 3 126 Deepfields Rd 19112013 1 DSCF7234 DSCF7242

To ensure a safer and cleaner environment for all, Camden Council has partnered with the Western Sydney Regional Illegal Dumping Squad (WSRID) to combat illegal dumping. Council and the WSRID squad investigate all illegal dumping reports on public or private land.

Illegal dumping is the disposal of waste on land or into the water without a licence, permit or approval from the relevant authority such as Council or the EPA.

Illegal dumping can include:

  • Placing unwanted household items on the footpath when there is no council collection
  • Leaving rubbish or green waste in the bush or on the side of a road
  • Businesses or contractors who are paid to dispose of waste correctly, do not take it to a waste facility, instead dump it
  • Dumping asbestos waste
  • Leaving soil or excavated materials on land without approval

Illegal dumping impacts the environment by polluting water or land and may lead to land contamination. Illegal dumping looks unsightly and financially burdens you, the community.

To prevent illegal dumping securely fence any land that is accessible for illegal dumping, particularly vacant land and rural properties.

If an illegal dump is wrapped with yellow and red 'under investigation' tape, it is already being investigated by Council.

Illegally Dumped Asbestos Materials

If you suspect illegally dumped asbestos materials, report it to Council immediately.

Council Officers will investigate and collect evidence to locate the dumper.

Public land: Council will work with emergency services to make the area safe and may organise for Council's approved asbestos removal contractor to collect.

Private land: The waste will become the property owner's responsibility to remove and remediate the site in consultation with Council's Environmental Health Officers.

You can report asbestos by contacting Council or reporting online at RID.

For asbestos being removed by contractors on building sites including home renovations, visit Council's Asbestos pageSafe Work NSW or Asbestos in NSW for more information.

Waste on Public Land

Whether out the front of a property, in a park or on a reserve we will inspect the materials to determine if any ownership can be located.

Illegal dumping investigations may include obtaining surveillance footage from nearby cameras and obtaining statements from witnesses.

For residential properties, we will check if the waste is awaiting a kerbside booking.

When the owner of the materials is found or the dumper is located, Council will contact them to remove the waste. Additionally, fines may be issued.
