Nepean River Cycleway
Alert issued 18/11/2024 10:52am
Camden has seen extensive damage across the Nepean River catchment as a result of the four floods that have occurred since February last year, including significant bank erosion along the Nepean River Cycleway.
Council is working with engineers and geotechnical specialists to determine works that need to be undertaken to protect the cycleway moving forward.
The playgrounds and fitness stations along the Cycleway have been reopened.
Some areas along the Cycleway are still fenced off due to significant erosion.
Blue-Green Algal Bloom at Harrington Park Lake
Alert issued 18/11/2024 10:52am
A blue-green algae bloom has been detected at Harrington Park Lake.
Sampling undertaken by Council has identified the presence of algae at levels that present a health risk associated with contact with the water. Residents are advised human and animal contact with the water should be avoided, including drinking, fishing, swimming, boating and allowing pets to enter the water.
Algae is a natural part of the aquatic ecosystem with most species safe or non-toxic. However, blue-green algae produce toxins that can be damaging to humans, domestic animals and livestock that come in contact with the water.
In normal conditions, the blue-green algae exist in low numbers and are a part of a healthy ecosystem. However, under certain conditions, the algae can grow rapidly, producing an algal bloom.
Signage has been erected at locations around the Lake to advise visitors to avoid contact with the water.
It is not possible to predict how long the algae will remain at high levels. Council will continue monitoring Harrington Park Lake and signage will remain in place until blue-green algae levels have reduced to a safe level.
