Harrington Forest restoration begins
Posted 4 years ago
Works to restore Harrington Forest’s Cumberland Plain Woodland began this week including weed treatment to help regenerate native vegetation in the area.
Council successfully secured funding of $20,000 from the Australian Government’s Communities Environment Program 2019/2020 this year, with works aiming to enhance and protect the only ecological community of its kind in western Sydney.
Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli said the restoration would allow residents to further connect with the local environment.
“Camden residents are very lucky to be living amongst so many fantastic natural areas such as Harrington Forest and it is important to maintain this area for future generation to enjoy,” Cr Fedeli said.
“Weed treatment will target African Olive and allow natural regeneration of native vegetation and improve local biodiversity.”
The works, expected to be completed between August 2020 and February 2021, include:
- Removal of woody weeds throughout the five-hectare project site; and
- Citizen science activities with the Bushcare group to install 10 nest boxes for native birds and mammals within the restored site.
Restoration of the site will be completed through primary and secondary weed treatment throughout the five-hectare site.
