About International Women's Day

IWD Webpage2

International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. Celebrated annually on 8 March, the day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender equality. Significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women's achievements or rally for women's equality.

The broad objectives of International Women's Day are to:

  • celebrate women's achievements;

  • raise awareness about women's equality;

  • lobby for accelerated gender parity; and

  • fundraise for female-focussed charities.

2021 Sports Hall of Fame inductee Jana Pittman’s story is a roller coaster of triumph, defeat, failure and success.

As two-time World Champion and four-time Commonwealth Champion in the sport of athletics, and the first woman to represent Australia in both a Summer (2000, 2004) and Winter Olympic Games (2014), Jana personifies resilience and determination.

Off the track Jana completed a Bachelor of Medicine & Surgery at Western Sydney University in 2019 (graduating with First Class Honours and the University Medal) and is now a practising doctor in south-eastern Sydney. Jana is also helping to establish one of Australia’s first uterus transplant teams and works with the International Society for Uterus Transplant. With her own personal scare with cervical dysplasia, Jana became an ambassador for the Australian Cervical Cancer Foundation.

MHC logoMother Hubbard's Cupboard

Mother Hubbard's Cupboard (MHC) began in May 2008 with the desire to do something to help the needs of our community, becoming a not-for-profit incorporated charity.

Our vision is simple:

To be aware of the needs of our local community and beyond and, as appropriate, to respond in practical and/or monetary ways.

 Our strategy is to raise funds or provide goods to meet these needs.

This is done by:

  • taking what we already have and no longer need - we rely on donations.

  • bringing goods to a central location where people are able to purchase them.

  The cycle is simple:

  • the donors clean out their cupboards,
  • the community find inexpensive bargains,
  • and the money raised is distributed to community needs.

EVERYONE WINS! “Filling what’s empty” aptly describes the process(We empty – they fill)

Our main focus is towards survivors of domestic and family violence and the homeless. MHC comes alongside agencies who are supporting those in need, providing furniture, household goods, linen and clothing to these families without cost to the agency or their clients.

MHC relies solely on volunteers (92 currently) and community donations, processing the donations and raising funds through an Op Shop at 65 Harrington Street, Elderslie, and Collectables and Old Wares Shop at 91 Argyle Street, Picton.

MHC is the community working for the community, doing together what we could not do as individuals.

By coming alongside and by our practical actions Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard is saying – you are worth it

MHC’s aim is fulfilled as people recover with dignity and go on in life’s journey.
